An ASV scan is an external vulnerability assessment for organisations that handle payment card data. Its results are used to demonstrate compliance with the external vulnerability scanning requirements of the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS).
Who needs an ASV scan?
All Organisations that accept payment cards must perform ASV scans when they have internet-facing systems that handle or could affect the security of cardholder data. This includes merchants that outsource all aspects of card payments to a third party provider.
How often should I do an ASV scan?
You must conduct an ASV Scan quarterly (every 90 days).
If you make significant changes to your network, such as installing a new server or upgrading software or systems that handle cardholder data, you must conduct an ASV Scan – even if it’s been less than 90 days since your last one.
What gets scanned in an ASV scan?
ASV scans focus on:
- External-facing IP addresses
- Domains associated with your e-commerce environment
